Job Summary

This position is responsible for the investigation, development, and implementation of new injection molding and/ or extrusion processes and technology. This person would be considered the subject matter expert in their field and must possess a thorough understanding of their engineering discipline. It is expected that the Senior Engineer II would stay current on emerging technology and trends in industry so as to enable implementation of “state of the art” systems. This role will require mentorship and development of more junior engineering associates. It is expected that the associate in this role be capable of leading projects centrally focused in their discipline such as the insourcing of existing components, etc.

Job Details/Responsibilities

  1. Lead and maintain responsibility for the design, development, and qualification of efficient, robust and cutting-edge Injection Molding and/ or Extrusion processes and equipment.

  2. Ensure all work and documentation is compliant with existing internal procedures and relevant external regulatory requirements.

  3. Provide guidance to product design teams in relation to DFM of molded and extruded components.

  4. Provide support in cost and capacity modeling as well as resource planning estimates for project assignments.

  5. Manage suppliers of molds and equipment to ensure established timelines, budgets and performance requirements are met.

  6. Provide mentorship and guidance to more junior staff members in order to develop their technical knowledge and engineering skillset.

  7. Manage projects whose primary objectives are based in Injection Molding and/ or Extrusion.

  8. Serve as subject matter expert in all matters concerning injection molding or extrusion engineering discipline.

  9. Identify areas of potential improvement in existing processes and build rationale to support their implementation.

  10. Present technical information to target audiences in a clear, concise and professional manner, in order to gain understanding and/ or consensus.

  11. Maintain positive relations with suppliers, contractors and all levels of associates.

  12. Performs other job-related duties assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA)

  • Ability to specify, procure, install and validate IM and/ or Extrusion equipment and processes

  • Ability to manage internal and external suppliers

  • Understanding and application of statistical experimental design and analysis techniques, Statistical Process Control (SPC), Six Sigma principals, problem solving and decision-making tools.

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Thorough understanding and application of scientifically based injection molding and/ or extrusion process development.

  • Ability to mentor junior associates

  • Ability to create technical reports and documentation suitable for inclusion in submissions to notified bodies

  • Thorough understanding of engineering drawings and tolerancing

  • Use and understanding of computer aided drafting systems, Solidworks preferred

  • In depth understanding of mold design and tooling and/ or extrusion tooling design

Qualifications/ Background Experiences

  • Typically requires a BS in Plastics Engineering or other relevant discipline

  • Minimum 10 years of increasing responsibility/experience in injection molding and/or extrusion engineering

  • Experience with manufacturing equipment design, procurement and validation

  • Experience in injection molding/ extrusion for medical devices or other highly regulated industry
